8 types of books to pack for young kids

October 16, 2018
Boy reading on the plane

Despite your packing efforts, they still might be just as interested in the safety flight card or in-flight magazine

Books are always a favorite to pack for a trip — for babies, adults and all ages in between (but if you’re an adult traveling with a baby, don’t get your hopes up that you’ll actually get to read your book!). I always like to pack a couple new ones for my preschooler in his carry-on before a vacation. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut of what types of books to buy, I’m sharing 8 of our favorites.

1. Board books

These are tried and true for even the youngest baby because they’re easy to clean and hard to destroy.Good Night Colorado

2. Reusable sticker books

Emphasis on reusable. You don’t want to be scraping stickers off the airplane window.

3. Scratch and sniff books

Switch up your reading routine by having your little one use their sense of smell.

4. Mix-and-match books

Find the matching pictures, or use your imagination to create your own creatures.

5. Lift-the-Flap books

These books are a great way to engage small kids (and kill time on the plane!).

Airplane Flight!: A Lift-the-Flap Adventure

6. I Spy books

Tip: Before you purchase this type of book online, be sure to check the dimensions so it won’t take over your entire carry-on bag. Many of these types of books are fairly large.

I Spy – Animals!

I Spy Little Letters

7. Learn a language book

Traveling to a new country? These books are great way for little kids (and even adults!) to learn some key words.

Lonely Planet Kids First Words – Spanish

Lonely Planet Kids First Words – French

8. Journal

Even if your child is too young to write, these are a fun activity if your child is old enough to carry on a conversation. These books ask questions so your kid can learn more about themselves. I promise their answers will be entertaining!
